THE FORMATION PROGRAM OF SAN JOSE SEMINARY

In 1601, the Colegio de San Jose, was founded by the Society of Jesus "to instruct and train the youth in virtue and learning ... and to train ministers of the Gospel for which there is great need in this land.” Three important points can be emphasized in this initial articulation of the goals of formation of the old Colegio:

> It aims at forming young men in virtud y tetras.

> It exists to help train ministers [or servants] of the Gospel. Thus the Josefino motto in opus ministerii.

> It was founded by the Society of Jesus, and therefore is imbued with the ideals and spirituality of St. Ignatius.

Following Pope John Paul IIs delineation of four key aspects of seminary formation in Pastores Dabo Vobis, drawing on the distinctive tradition of San Jose, and in response to contemporary challenges to the Philippine Church, we identify four key words that sum up the formative goals of San Jose Seminary. San Jose Seminary aims at forming men of virtue, learning, spirit and service, agents of renewal of Church and Society in the Philippines.
